Jan Adriaanse is professor of turnaround management at the Leiden Law School of Leiden University. He is engaged in research projects in the interdisciplinary field of financial distress, turnaround management and insolvency law. He is an author on these subjects and a regular speaker at international conferences. In December 2005 he defended his doctoral thesis called ‘Restructuring in the Shadow of the Law. Informal Reorganization in the Netherlands’.
Jan Adriaanse is co-founder of BFI (www.bfiglobal.com), a valuation advisory and investigation firm based in Amsterdam specializing in complex business valuations, corporate investigations, turnarounds and disputes.
In the annual Global Insolvency Practice Course of INSOL International he teaches the so-called ‘Workout Clinic’. Millions of companies in Europe find themselves in dire situations. Some of them will eventually survive, others will unfortunately end up in bankruptcy. What are the critical factors of success in turning a company around, today and in the future? What is the role of each individual stakeholder within this process, and what skills are necessary today and in the future? And how about trends in ESG? These are only a few of the questions that will be addressed in the challenging workshop in which ‘live research’ is combined with serious gaming elements.
Dr Esther van Fenema
Psychiatrist and High Performer Coach
Dr Esther van Fenema PhD is a top psychiatrist, specialising in coaching and supporting high-performers such as sector specialists, CEOs, doctors, musicians and managing directors.
For over 10 years she ran a clinic at the Leiden University Medical Centre where she helped musicians and other high performers with performance anxiety before starting her own practice in 2019. Through her many years of experience, she has extensive knowledge about stress biology and, in particular, having to perform under stress. She, herself, trained as a professional violinist and still plays regularly.
Now, Esther specialises in helping people in high-pressure positions to shed dysfunctional patterns, create healthy coping mechanisms and teaches them how to keep relationships with themselves and their colleagues healthy and pleasant.
Esther is also a prolific author in her field publishing Het Ontstemde Brein (The Discontented Brain) in 2018, Waarom Kan Ik Niet Gewoon Gelukkig Zijn? (Why Can’t I Just Be Happy?) in 2020 and Het Verlaten Individu, Waarom Voelen We Ons Zo Leeg? (The Abandoned Individual, Why Do We Feel So Empty?) in 2022.
As an active opinion maker, Esther was also invited to host a TEDX talk in 2016 and she can be seen and read regularly in the national media.
In this Leadership workshop, Dr Esther van Fenema will introduce participants to the fundamental patterns of the brain. She will lead participants through several questions key to understanding how the brain deals with pressure: How do we react to stress and danger? How do we develop primary patterns in our relationships? How do these patterns affect your ability to cope? What are the characteristics, strength and vulnerability of high-performers?
The workshop will also discuss important and common leadership patterns, delving into how they arise and how it is possible to adjust them based on self-knowledge.
Professor Barry Hedley
MA (Cantab); MBA (Harvard); FRSA; MIET; C Eng
Strategic Advisor and Emeritus Fellow of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge
Barry Hedley has many years of experience helping C-Suite teams globally to develop and execute commercial corporate and business unit strategies, maximising competitive advantage and creating value responsibly for all stakeholders.
His particular focus is on creating corporate processes that enable management teams to operate effectively and rapidly in changing environments.
After gaining first class degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering from Cambridge University, Barry’s early career was with The Boston Consulting Group, which he joined in Boston after gaining a Baker Scholarship and MBA as a Harkness Fellow at Harvard Business School. He was a member of the team that established BCG’s London office and he later founded the European arm of the international strategy, financial consulting and private equity firm Braxton Associates. This later became the global strategy practice of Deloitte Consulting. As its Chief Executive Barry grew this to around 1000 consultants operating from over 20 offices worldwide.
Throughout his consulting career Barry lectured part time at Business Schools internationally, becoming a Professor at Imperial College Management School, London, focussing on strategy topics and returning to Cambridge University in 2000 as a Fellow of Gonville & Caius College, also teaching courses at the Judge Business School. This has combined naturally with his role as co-founder and active Chair of Dialectyx, helping senior management teams internationally develop “Fast Strategy” commercially effective business solutions, using innovative and “gamified” experiential learning processes.
“People are at their most mindful when they are at play; their senses are fully engaged, their physical and mental prowess is at its highest. If we find ways of enjoying our work – blurring the lines between work and play – the gains will be greater.”
Ellen Langer, Professor of Psychology, Harvard University
Today, difficult decision choices come at you thick and fast. There’s rarely enough time to research and analyse a business proposition as thoroughly as you would like. This workshop is designed to help you to prosper in this challenging business environment. You will learn how to calibrate your business instinct so that the rapid conclusions you have to reach are as sound as possible. And how to ensure that your commercial choices are enterprising, and oriented towards growth and new value creation, rather than “safe” (which often means negative).
Barry’s workshop will be practical, fast, experiential and interactive using an approach that has been applied both on-line and face-to-face for several years in Cambridge and other universities and also in many international corporate settings, large and small.
The “Fast Strategy” principles it embodies are supported by the BBC, Sony and Deloitte, who were all involved in the research on which it is based and contributed to its design.
Participants will learn to rapidly distil out the essentials of commercial market and competitive success, link them with financial, organisation and people risk assessment, and apply them in making go/no go decisions.
Participants will work in teams to see how much value you can create from a fast-paced succession of real world investment opportunities: “smart simulations” based on popular media such as BBC TV’s Dragons’ Den. These experiences will give you confidence that you can similarly address any of the wide range of actual business situations you will confront later when you return to work after the conference. You will also be taught to start assessing your own personal commercial skills, preparing the ground for the later sessions in the conference oriented towards professional skills enhancement and leadership.
Importantly, the workshop methodology is fun and feels both exciting and real.
